OpenAI Dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra, the model OpenAI highlighted at DevDay on 29 September 2026 as the intelligence behind the always-on agents.
Why a dedicated computer
Each Dot is given its own cloud computer and browser. That design supports multi-step work, inspection by the user and optional connection to the user's laptop. It is a different shape from a pure API call or a single chat completion: the agent has a persistent environment in which to operate.
Plugins on top of the computer
The computer is the runtime; plugins are how the Dot reaches external apps. OpenAI cites a catalog of more than 4,000 apps. Permissions for plugins can be shared with other ChatGPT surfaces depending on how the account is configured.
Read-only proactive mode
When the user is not actively directing the Dot, OpenAI describes background research limited to read-only tools—no sending, editing or browser/computer control in that mode. Assigned tasks can still run with the broader toolset under the user's approval rules.
